Yarra Valley Spoken Word Friday 11th September 2026: Mel Rowe
Spring is about to be Sprung! As are all the Seasons Within Her…
Please join us in welcoming YVSW regular contributor Mel Rowe (Fairy Mel) to the main stage!
Mel Rowe is a writer, poet, singer and songwriter from the serene (but sometimes tempestuous) Yarra Valley.
She holds a Masters in Literature and Writing with a creative and theoretical dissertation in Fairytales.
Mel has a keen interest in writing allegorically and with a particular focus on memory, relationships, the self, and fairytale magical possibilities to transform and heal real-life experiences.
Mel’s short story writing has been published in Flash Fiction Magazine. Her poetry has appeared in the Wildsound writing festival.
Mel divides her time between teaching at Deakin University, undertaking a tarot course and discovering a world of goddesses and mythology. And being a mother of four girls aged seven to twenty-four!
Mel is currently developing her doctorate thesis idea in relation to the mother archetype in Australian history, with a particular focus on the link between the mother, maiden and crone stages and their cyclical relationship/story-telling voices in the heroine’s journey.
Mel is a regular at Yarra Valley Spoken Word and has conducted a very well received workshop teaching us how to write a Fairytale…
She will share her life experiences which invite you into a poetic and song cyclic journey. One which has at times been murky, times radiant, times obscure and times rhythmic.
She steps both into the darkness (like her name) and the light, asking that you get ready to traverse her weather. This is… Within her seasons.
Welcome to our Yarra Valley Spoken Word Community.
The original custodians of the Yarra Valley were the Wurundjeri people. Their wisdom travelled through time in songs, art, stories, mentorship and dance. We acknowledge this land’s indigenous ancestors and elders, oral historians of the dream-time. This poetry gathering sits on the shoulders of countless generations of wisdom keepers and spoken word story tellers.
We meet at The Dreaming Space Dome at Yarra Valley ECOSS, Wesburn on the second Friday of the month and welcome you to join us and share your musings.
Ours is a space to share the power of the spoken word, be inspired by our community of artists and learn to write and share life’s depths through this life changing art form.
Families are welcome until after supper, we have a feature artist each month and then Open Mic.
Spoken Word is an inclusive project.
